Consultant Paediatric Ophthalmologist and Ophthalmic Surgeon

Mr Susmito Biswas is a consultant ophthalmologist at the Manchester Royal Eye Hospital. He was appointed consultant in 2002 and has a specialist interest in children's eye disorders including strabismus (squint), infantile and juvenile and developmental cataracts, paediatric retinal disease, glaucoma and corneal and external eye disease and Retinopathy of Prematurity. Mr Biswas also undertakes high volume adult cataract surgery and is involved in training ophthalmologists in this area. He graduated from St Bartholomew's Hospital in London in 1992 and trained in Ophthalmology in Manchester. He undertook a research fellowship in genetic eye disease Manchester and Lausanne, Switzerland before undertaking clinical fellowships in Paediatric Ophthalmology at Great Ormond Street Hospital, London, Kings College Hospital, London and The Manchester Royal Eye Hospital.

Since his appointment as consultant in 2002, the paediatric ophthalmology fellowship training programme has grown to become one of the most sought after training programmes in the UK.

Mr Biswas has published widely, with over 30 peer reviewed publications, and is a regular peer reviewer for the British Journal of Ophthalmology. He has also been invited to speak at national and international meetings on aspects of paediatric ophthalmology. He is currently a member of the Council for the Royal College of Ophthalmologists representing the North West of England and sits on the Royal College's Scientific Committee.
