Mr Khalid Ikram

Mr Ikram is an Honorary Consultant at Manchester Royal Eye Hospital, where he has regularly carried out all kinds of Laser Vision Correction procedures, as well as Excimer Laser phototherapeutic keratectomy, since 2002. He commenced his NHS Consultant post in 2002, based at Stepping Hill Hospital, Stockport.
Khalid Ikram graduated from Charing Cross & Westminster Medical School, in 1991. He then trained extensively in ophthalmic surgery in London, Southampton, Oxford and Manchester. At Manchester Royal Eye Hospital, he undertook the first advanced specialist training period (fellowship) in Corneal and Refractive procedures. This involved, uniquely for a UK fellowship, laser vision correction as well as corneal transplantation & other specialized anterior segment surgery.
In his NHS post, Mr Ikram has extensive responsibilities in the teaching and training of junior ophthalmic surgeons and is Royal College Tutor at Stepping Hill. He sits on the regional specialist training committee, selecting individuals for advanced ophthalmic surgical training, and also monitoring and assessing their progress. At Manchester Centre for Vision, his work includes the supervision and training of the Corneal fellow, in Refractive surgery.
Mr Ikram also has a particular interest in improving the standards of assessment and planning for cataract and refractive lens surgery, and has run regular instruction courses in Biometry in Oxford, as well at both national (UKISCRS) and international (ESCRS) conferences.
Specialising in anterior segment surgery, Mr Ikram has further developed expertise in the refractive aspects of such surgery. He is experienced in a large variety of refractive surgery techniques (corneal Excimer laser and intraocular lens surgery) for the management of conditions such as myopia (short-sightedness), hyperopia (long-sightedness) and presbyopia (age related reduction in the eye’s ability to focus on near targets).
Mr Ikram’s workload as a Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon includes:
- Laser vision correction (LASIK and LASEK)
- Refractive lens surgery or clear lens extraction (CLE)
- Surgical correction of short and long sightedness
- Correction of age-related long-sightedness or Presbyopia (PRELEX)
- Use of specialist intraocular lenses (to deal with near vision & astigmatism problems)
Khalid Ikram is a member of the UK and European Societies of Cataract and Refractive Surgery and the American academy of Ophthalmology. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists.
